The Glasshouse: Conference Center, Arts and Entertainment, including a theater arts for 600 spectators, a regional art gallery of 600 m2, a studio theater, conference facilities and community workshops. Located in the heart of Port Macquarie, a fast-growing coastal town north of Sydney, the commissioning of the project was to establish the Cultural Centre as a prominent facility for the development and exhibition of the arts in the region.
The design takes advantage of the views of the Pacific Ocean and based on the “openness” and accessibility. The gallery is located to share the foyer of the theater space, enabling the proper display of public spaces of the building and in a few days of visits, the center can operate with minimal staff.
Wrapped around the sculptural shape of the auditorium, the foyers are open and glassy, besides being naturally ventilated. The expression of the building and the foyer generated by contrasting the order of the grid of the city and voluminous forms the lining of the theater, with its three levels, the glass wall is located on Clarence Street. Gaps trained and shading overhangs generated for the street, airflow and an exciting journey from the street architectural audience.
The auditorium is a horseshoe-shaped proscenium, with a completely equipped. Operable sound screens allow the space used for concerts of classical music. The orchestra pit rises and falls hydraulically to increase the flexibility of space. All visual angles were modeled computationally and sound performance was applied in the design to meet the highest standards.
