The owner of the house called home comfort while on vacation, and the memory of the place (I had met the previous summer) were applied, away from fads.

It is a dwelling between party and a penthouse floor and in which the section is considered the key to the configuration of space, although it was in the originally proposed. This is, remained almost entirely the spatial structure of the existing building, but creates double-height spaces, clearances are corrected, it is a clean work space and creates a natural light axis crossing the housing main body from east to west, from the doors and through the stairs, which does not have risers to promote this visual axis.

In this part of the dwelling is located more public program, access, toilet, kitchen, living room and master bedroom, located in the attic and open to be.

Also, to encourage the entry of natural light in this area between medians, the deeper, open skylights in the roof-glass window as if they were slabs of slate on the double-height spaces that have opened in the various plants. For the light reaches the ground floor, part of the pavement on the first floor in the living room with laminated glass is made transparent.

Independent and with its own staircase, the children’s area in the south and body height lower than the previous one, has one bedroom, one bathroom and a play area with use, also sleeping. Here, a steel tube, ranging from the foundation to the roof, the ladder support and help define spaces. Under the staircase is located a storage room with opaque glass enclosed between the fluorescent tube that houses an indirect way to illuminate the ground floor of this area.

The model, in terms of internal structure was the original home. Lack of corridors, the rooms succeeds one another and the figure of the stairs in the plant of the house. In fact, the stairs are in the same place they occupied in the original configuration and resting on the dividing wall of stone and a new wall of concrete, formwork with wooden planks, like the boards that previously separated the ladder room in the original house.

Moving in this house means going through spaces shaped by natural light. This model will allow the property is capable of generating various programmatic solutions to small changes in furniture.

The programmatic increase over the current situation culminated in the demolition of existing housing, the building, the introduction of a new floor and the compatibility of the facade with a new program, required the adoption of solutions such as a lifting platform car parking and to improve dialogue between people and place, through the different slopes and the proposed construction.

The Prince of Wales Country Club was a challenge to live up to the times for which they proposed to offer new services related to leisure and sport and re-enchanting and its partners to promote the informal, and increase the general use during the week.

There were well-established and outdoor facilities so the strategy was to define a platform-level sports resolved underground, and gardens of the north flank of the Club House. In a contemporary language that will not create conflict with the existing architecture of such eclectic turn, the fact of being underground maintains the existing situation of looking at the sports fields from the same building, which represents a value for the architectural design status of the original building site.

The functional unity of the new facilities is from the subway, at your sides, with ramps leading down to the level swimming pool and gym. While in the first level, connection occurs via two bridges, which link the existing building, and sports areas.

The project consists of a single flag, versatile in part to the field has a large curved wall with a steady rhythm, which contains a pool and gym areas lit from above by light sockets marked on the grassy. Furthermore, this curved wall by their morphology improves structure solution for the project. In contrast, we present a benign south facade around a yard light travels.

Important compositional elements in the main hall of the underground site, as already mentioned, the curved wall is covered with mosaics, a plastic finish ceiling, light sockets in a steady and continuous glass cloth over the entire project.

For its playful form and character, the Zenith music room contributes a large variety theater that created since the building built Zenith in Paris in 1984. The new Zenith building is an important project for the exhibition area in Strasbourg. This will be the new attraction that will give new impetus to the further development of city infrastructure.

The design concept based on a modular and well-balanced organization of the different elements: good views for all spectators, the best acoustics and an optimized cost management and addressed during the design phase of the design. The Zenith hall offers the ideal setting for guests and artists, performers. The building is to be understood as a unique sculpture, unified and independent. The amount of layers and the rotation of the ellipsoid metal structure of the facade, the design receive a very dynamic character. This confirmed by the translucent textile membrane, which covers the steel frame and creates magnificent light effects. These orange membranes also cover the volume of the music hall itself. This is the heart of the building: a totally enclosed and protected, creating a special atmosphere of the theater.

Projections on the outer skin create playful effects and convert the facade into a huge billboard in communicating with passers-by for upcoming events. The inner experience transmitted to the outside through the transparent skin: the building becomes a “light sculpture.”

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, located in Port Elizabeth is the third stadium designed by gmp Architekten for the football World Cup. The host eight matches, including the match for third and fourth place. Designed as football and rugby stadium, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is located next to North End Lake.

The stadium is located in the suburbs and has become a landmark building, growing in the lake with a shape biomimetics. The silhouette of the stadium shows the clean design of its structure. This hall with columns contains the whole stadium.

The roof structure is geared to local climatic conditions and protects the spectators not only from the sun, but and especially against the frequent and violent gusts of wind. The protection is made of aluminum trusses braced caldding done on white PTFE membrane. All technical installations, such as sound and lighting system, and the maintenance of the walkway, integrated into the roof.

The stadium designed for 48,000, divided into two levels. The rounded design of the stadium ensures optimal viewing conditions, also an intimate and emotional. The design takes into account not only the function, technical and climatic aspects but also the cultural aspects. Local African artisans giving an exhibition of 700 meters wide from the traditional and modern African culture completed the facade, which is in the back of colonnading.

The construction of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium offers the opportunity to Port Elizabeth with a high level of quality sports facilities, will revitalize the entire urban area. The design objective is to encourage the maximum for it to be used after the World Cup. All areas of the stadium press can become offices and leisure facilities. There is open area between the stadium and the sea offering recreation for visitors. Existing sports clubs in Port Elizabeth use the stadium on a daily basis.

The former Larkin Building U is being cleaned out by Rogers Foam Corp., the automotive parts manufacturer that bought out the now defunct Par Foam Products, Inc., a competitor. Par Foam Products, which occupied the historic factory complex at 237 Van Rensselaer Street for more than two decades, was closed late last year and its assets are now reportedly being shipped to other plants or discarded.

Larkin Building U is now getting closer by the day to a clean slate, a cleared, highly adaptable structure poised for a new economic purpose. While the future of the building is unclear, its potential becomes even more vividly apparent as the building is vacated.

Larkin Building U, constructed in the early 1890s, is a classic industrial loft building constructed in the Romanesque Revival style. At three stories, the structure is a combination of brick masonry, cast iron columns and wood floors held up by thick wooden support beams. Large windows, including a series of fabulous arched windows at its Van Rensselaer Street frontage, flood much of the building with natural light. Tall ceilings create a fantastic sense of openness and space common to this building type.

Emptied, the building has a lonely feeling inside. The quiet after a factory closes is palpable. It’s an experience that has become associated with Rust Belt cities, and is one that is not likely to become less common as the American automotive industry continues to wobble. Par Foam Products may have bitten the dust, but they have been good stewards of the heritage structure. The building endures. And what a great building it is!

Today’s urban scene of the week (er, scene of the month?) brings us to 567 Exchange Street, an alluringly spare, rustic loft building at the banks of Buffalo’s most historic and longest-enduring rail line, the Buffalo & Attica, first built in 1843 and later subsumed into the New York Central rail empire that connected the city to New York, Chicago, and the vast reaches of the continent beyond.

The four-story structure was not constructed at this site in 1900 for no reason. The Buffalo Lounge Co., for which the building was erected, chose this precise location because of the geography of the Hydraulics at the intersection of several rail lines, including the Erie and New York Central. The Buffalo Lounge Co. was directly linked to both lines via a rail bed that once existed behind the building.

The wholesale furniture company, which sold wares in bulk from catalogue to dealer only, was part of a network of rail-connected, large-scale manufacturers that made the Hydraulics an impressive center of industry at the turn of the century. At this site the firm built lounges, couches, adjustable end divans, bed lounges, wardrobes, and bed couches to be shipped by rail to dealers across the United States.

The unique position of the building at one of the country’s largest rail intersections equally benefited the Craver-Dickinson Seed Co., which occupied the building around 1933 and sold seeds worldwide from this location for decades. Today, the building does not serve its original purpose as a traditional manufactory linked by rail, and the building’s adaptability and durable construction have assured its new lease on life. Owned by investor Chris Jacobs of 567 Exchange Street LLC, the building now houses several creative industries tenants, including, as it happens, a few very cool businesses that sell furniture.

The emergency demolition of the landmark building reportedly cost taxpayers a cool $125,000. Economic return on the investment? Zero. While few doubt the necessity of the demolition in light of its collapsing brick facade and the imminent threat the building posed to human safety, fewer still believe the school’s “demolition by neglect” was inevitable.

Buffalo is at the cross-hairs of continuing economic struggle and an invigorated comprehension of the revitalization resource of the city’s historic architecture. The redevelopment of certain historic resources is being realized, but hundreds of opportunities persist in going unnoticed. The Sacred Heart School is one example, one of those buildings that, if only the foresight had been there ten or fifteen years ago, might have been sealed up and saved for a better day, set aside for some future entrepreneur who would have seen what others now see: economic potential. Lofts. Offices. Gallery space. Who knows? Now, we’ll never know what might have been.

Thirty years of neglect is a difficult situation to arrest, particularly in eleventh hour scenarios. When historic landmarks are literally crumbling into the street, which is what occurred in this case, immediate remedies are elusive. As economic opportunities like the Sacred Heart School pass us by, however, others come into greater focus. Hefty demolition tabs are putting a spotlight on the urgent need to preserve now the restoration potential of character buildings far in advance of preservation crises. The threatened Sacred Heart Church (above), which stands tenuously adjacent to the now demolished school, may be a test of the community’s ability to preserve economic value while there is still a fighting chance to reverse the “inevitable.”

“The present is the ever moving shadow that divides yesterday and tomorrow. In that lies hope.” – Frank Lloyd Wright, 1958.

The Larkin Power House is an endlessly fascinating structure, and forms the background for this “urban scene of the week,” this blog’s periodical commentary on particular vantage points in the Hydraulics. The view is found at the nexus of yesterday and tomorrow, communicating history and possibility.

The scene, taken a few dozen feet from the New York Central tracks south of Swan Street, is archetypal of Buffalo’s industrial landscape, with its massive factory buildings rising over the urban prairie. The Power House is part of a composition of industrial structures undoubtedly taken into consideration by Frank Lloyd Wright when he designed the Larkin Administration Building, which broke ground only two years after the Power House began construction in 1902.
Though only a fence pier remains of the Administration Building, demolished in 1950, it is perhaps particularly apt that a vantage point reminiscent of the Midwest prairie today acts as a foreground to a complex to which Frank Lloyd Wright, author of the Prairie School of Architecture, made an important contribution. The inspiration of the Prairie School, which grew out of appreciation for America’s vast horizontal landscape (think the endless prairie of the Midwest) and emphasized the relationship of buildings to nature, is brought into focus at industrial sights of the Larkin District.
